REHABILITATION COUNSELING
AND JOB DEVELOPMENT

CBPHP draws upon its experiences, skills and connections to provided integrated, community-based, enriched services in counseling and job development to enhance employment outcomes for Metropolitan Detroiters with physical, mental, medical disabilities or illness. The approach is one-on-one customized, comprehensive, real-life and real-time assessment, counseling, vocational goals and objectives setting activities to improve the overall job search and employment outcomes. Each individual participates in intensive counseling to understand and develop skills to match her/his employment objectives. This is followed by assistance for participants to develop a job search portfolio consisting of resume, cover letters, follow-up letters and thank you notes. Depending on individual unique needs, assistance is provided for transportation, enhance self-presentation, "cognitive resources", identification and assistance to remove or overcome employment related barriers. We accomplish job search and sustained employment goals by offering the following menu of services:

Counseling: A minimal of 5 hours and up to 10 structured hours of counseling depending on the level of the participants' unique needs, employment experiences and ability to learn.

Community Resource Development and Peer Support are designed to connect participants with community resources and guided peer interactions to understand how to contact, engage with and take advantage of complementary community services to enhance their job search and employment experiences.

Assistive Technology Training: Technology use is an essential tool for modern day job search. Therefore, in-depth device demonstrations are designed to assess a person with a disability's capacity to effectively utilize assistive technology to enhance his/her job experience.

Job search online and in-person: Each participant is provided with a comprehensive portfolio to facilitate the job search process. Each portfolio is customized to enhance participant's background, experience, and skills.

Transportation Assessment and Mobility Training: Transportation is essential to employment in Metro Detroit. One-on-one transportation assessment and coaching is provided to meet individual needs.

Job Placement and Follow Up Services: A log is established for each participant to document all contacts with staff, peers, outside agencies and family members. The content of logs are driven by participants. Typical logs include:

  • Tasks and their timelines
  • Responsible staff and outside agencies
  • Routine adjustments to plan and rationale
  • Needs: Technology, Assistive Technology, Transportation and general referrals
  • Types of supports: Counseling, Peer, Group
  • Evaluations.

Program Committee is established to: review services for each participant to ensure:

  • Services are delivered according to CBPHP Guidelines
  • Services align with each individual participant's unique needs, strength and desires
  • Employment outcomes have potential to be sustained and contribute to participants quality of life and community integration
  • Needed changes and updates to service delivery approaches and emerging evaluation insights.

Support Staff for Rehabilitation Counseling and Job Placement: CBPHP has in place trained and experienced staff including consumers and/or family members. Complimentary staff education, training, program delivery and management experiences and above all, intuitive appreciation of disabilities issue that promote effective, efficient and sensitive service delivery include the following backgrounds.

  • Ph.D. in Instructional Technology, MA in Special Education. Support services and consultation in Public School System (DPS and RESA). Teacher Consultant-Orientation and Mobility Instructors, Technology Coordinator, Visually Impaired Arts and Craft Teachers. Community ties include Disability Action Coalition, Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, Easter Seals Board, International Forum for Women in e-Learning, and United Cerebral Palsy of Metropolitan Detroit (UPC). Parent of adult child with disability.
  • Certification in Secretarial Science and years of experience as Generalist and specific Office Management responsibilities within Federal Government, Private Sector and Nonprofit Organizations. Conversant with Word, WordPerfect, Lotus Notes, Excel, PowerPoint and other Window applications. Considerable experience in organization, storage and management of sensitive consumer information and program evaluation data. Years of work and interactions with individuals with disabilities and their families.
  • Professional service provider and parent of consumer of disability related services for over two decades. Education background and certifications include Ph.D (disability issues in work and community environments) MA (Rehabilitation Counseling). LPC (COPI). Worked with CIL and DPS as Coordinator of Transition, Community Integration and Employment for youth and adult with disabilities in Detroit. Developed training manuals to assist non-profit organizations and Community Centers to support and enhance program activities for children and youth with special needs.
  • Ph.D in Sociology with years of experience in design and management of community-based research, evaluation and support services for marginalized groups. Activities range from Detroit neighborhoods in terms of linkages with grassroots organizations, Wayne State University, State of Michigan (Department of Health) Children's Choice of Michigan and national level - RSA, HHS (Ryan White HIV/Aids Services), Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Part of core group for Detroit Initiative for Inclusive Communities and CBPHP as an enduring offshoot of this initiative.
  • Veteran with deep roots and commitment to Detroit, especially education and mentorship of youth and young adults. BA in Sociology and Urban Planning. Course work in health and disabilities. Long time employment experience with VA including roles as Veterans Service Representative and Claims Assistant. Knowledge and academic background in VA research methodology, laws, rules and policies and their use for processing claims of veterans. Conversant in electronic data processing and tracking systems (COVERS, VACOLS, RBA 2000), related privacy policies and procedures.
  • MA, Education with major in Rehabilitation Counseling and Community Inclusion. Exposure and experience with Detroit Area non-profit organizations through internships and training. Licensed counselor with background in individual and group counseling. Network of relationships and familiarity with Metro Detroit area businesses from years of experience as manager of medium sized retail store with more than 6 employees in mid-town Detroit area. Has both academic and intuitive background for job development, placement and follow up.
